    The memoirs of the Yiddish writer Samuil Ortenberg "The Fabric of Life" were published in several issues of the journal-newspaper "Workshop" with continuations in 2015 (https://club.berkovich-zametki.com/?p=16134) translated into Russian and used success with readers. These memoirs, supplemented by illustrations, are presented in the proposed book. The events in the book cover the years 1910-1930 and describe the life of Jews in the pre-revolutionary years and during the formation of Soviet power in Ukraine. In the first part, the action takes place in a Jewish town against the background of wars, revolution, banditry, and pogroms. The second part contains the stories of humanitarianally educated Jews who believed in the Bolshevik propaganda of internationalism and are trying to create a new Jewish culture. The author realized the illusory nature of his youthful aspirations only at the end of the journey, realizing the enduring value of the Jewish tradition, enshrined in the centuries-old history of the people.
